To Start or Not To Start
By Brian Pruitt
I can still remember the discussions between my wife and I
on whether to start a business or for that matter what business to get into.
We knew that things had to change. I had a good career that we had sacrificed
for over the years and had reached a point that was considered “the pinnacle”
in my field. However, not only did we feel deep down that we really hadn’t
reached that high point in our life, but things in the economy were leaving
us feeling uneasy and there was that old lack of job security.
Well those feelings started to manifest themselves. I lost my high paying
job, and jobs in my career field were very few and far between. I did manage
to find another position, the pay was respectable and things were back on
track. Well that is what we thought! Six weeks after relocating to another
state and starting my new position, management announced that there were
going to be layoffs! We had lost over 75% in my department alone!
Ok, let’s get back to the story of To Start or Not To Start. The excuses, the
self- made speed bumps and the self doubting had to come to an end. We now
knew more so then ever that we needed to diversify ourselves and start
something, anything, to get us out of the starting blocks.
We had been reading and studying about Real Estate investing for quite some
time. Buying books, tape-sets and attending seminars, it was now time to stop
talking and start acting. We set a date, marked it on the calendar and that
was the “start date” for our business. We realized that if we didn’t set an
“official date” that another day, week or month would go by and the ball
would never get rolling.
We bought a notebook to record our activities and any expenses we might
incur, for tax purposes, and we began walking the steps that we have read
about for so long. Remember back when you were young and barely could reach
those peddles on that bicycle with training wheels? Your father or mother
helped you mount that seemingly huge vehicle that traveled the speed of
light. Let’s look at that same example today. Had you never stepped out and
attempted that seemingly unachievable task of riding that bicycle you would
have never felt the accomplishment and the experience of that ear to ear
smile while riding down that sidewalk.
Yes, we felt nervous. Not sure if we “really” knew what we were doing,
however, we were doing something. If you want a change in your life you must
do something or nothing will ever change.
So, to answer the question of the topic of this article – Yes, start
something and start something today. You will make mistakes. Learn and grow
from those mistakes and continue on reaching for your goals and dreams. Just
think how good it will feel and how big your grin will be when you reach that
goal, that dream!
Keep Reaching, Keep Dreaming!
